Battle Three - Ashleigh

Formada en 1998, la banda 30 Seconds to Mars con base en Los Ángeles, fue originalmente creada por Shannon Leto en las baterías, junto a su hermano menor Jared como cantante. Aunque solo los hermanos Leto escribieron en su totalidad el disco del 2002, “30 Seconds to Mars”, el interés por la banda comenzó a crecer, y a los dos se unió Matt Wachter en el bajo y teclados, seguido de algo así como una lista de citas rápidas con guitarristas, hasta que finalmente encontraron un alma gemela en Tomo Milicevic, quien permanece con la banda hasta ahora. Wachter probó no ser una compañía permanente, y en Marzo del 2007, anunció su partida de 30STM, y a solo un mes, ya compartía con su nuevo compañero Tom Donge y su nueva y similar tribu mística, la banda de rock alternativo “Angels and Airwaves”. A pesar de las especulaciones estándares, Jared le aseguró a sus fans que la separación fue totalmente amigable y que debería ser visto simplemente como el fin de una fase y el comienzo de otra, suena a cliché? Antes de la salida de Wachter, 30 Seconds to Mars tropezó con un éxito moderado cortesía de su debut con su disco del mismo nombre. Este álbum, producido por Bob Ezrin y realizado a través de Virgin Records, es ciertamente mucho mas conceptual que el más reciente trabajo de la banda y abunda en espesos laberintos de muestras y sincronismo. “30 Seconds to Mars” es frecuentemente considerado como una exploración solitaria e interior en comparación con “A Beautiful Lie”, el cual, aunque aun es personal, toma fuego desde varios temas globales que continúan siendo una abrumadora fuente de inspiración, y aparente obsesión, para la banda hoy en día. Aunque “A Beautiful Lie”, producido por Josh Abraham, ganó el reconocimiento para 30STM a través de una propuesta mas corriente, llevando a la banda al escenario principal del Festival Download del año pasado, que fue cuando los chicos aparecieron en Radio One’ Live Lounge en Septiembre del 2007 en su debut con su oscura e hipnótica interpretación de inmenso hit musical de Kanye West, ‘Stronger’, fue allí cuando las cosas empezaron a tomar un nivel completamente nuevo. El tour de 30 Seconds to Mars en febrero del 2008 vendió notoriamente rápido y, debido a su abrumador y sin precedentes éxito, incluso garantizaron la adición de fechas extras; una hazaña rara para una banda liderada por un actor que se volvió músico, especialmente uno que aun es visto como solo una diversión o con desdén por una sección substancial de los medios de comunicación. 30 Seconds to Mars obviamente sabia eso, con el mundo finalmente viéndolos y las apuestas por montón y firmemente en su contra, necesitaban permanecer 100% impecables e igualmente firmes. Es precisamente la suprema atención de 30 Seconds to Mars en los detalles acompañado del deseo ardiente de conquistar terrenos nuevos (muy literalmente en algunos casos) lo que los lleva a romper records como el de convertirse en la primera banda Americana en filmar en la República Popular de China y la primera banda en la historia en grabar a dos mil millas al norte del Circulo Ártico, con sus dos videos para “From Yesterday” y “A Beautiful Lie”.

Mientras todo lo anterior deja a los más inclinados a lo tradicional de ustedes mareados y huraños en la pura vulgaridad de todo, tomen un segundo para considerar el camino detrás de tal aparente ostentación de un gran espectaculo. Mientras Jared Leto obviamente tiene un natural talento para el dramatismo y la cinemática – éste es un actor asociado con oscuros, perturbadores y hermosos filmes que incluyen “Réquiem por un Sueño”, “Psicópata Americano” y el “Club de la Pelea” después de todo – la banda simultáneamente parece poseer una percepción de la industria, especialmente en relación a la sociedad de hoy en día, capaces de confiar su arte a una nueva esfera: la música, en teoría, se convierte en la base para provocar cambios físicos y políticos.

La banda no solo alienta a los fans a mostrar los cambios que ellos hacen subiendo sus videos a “30 Seconds to Green” en Buzznet.com, también promocionan simples pero valiosos tips en abeautifullie.org: “Si todos tomáramos treinta segundos para inflar sus llantas con la apropiada presión ahorraríamos 2.000.000 de aceite (combustible) al día”.

Parece ser entonces, que lejos de los flashes de luces de Hollywood, las novias célebres, las brillantes líneas de delineador y el espectáculo excesivo , la esencia de 30 Seconds to Mars es su deseo de ir mas allá de la verdad de lo que es esperado, y siempre ir adelante a algo más. La pregunta sin embargo, aunque la música ha sido por mucho tiempo una forma de catarsis personal y de cura, puede esta metodología realmente ser aplicada a la Tierra? Inevitablemente solo el tiempo lo dirá pero, habiendo probado que ellos son más que un intento de banda o de salvar el mundo más que de embellecerlo, permítannos recordar dos cosas: Primero, Jared Leto está al frente de una de las primeras bandas que exitosamente atravesó el espinoso vacío entre el cine y el micrófono, Segundo, y mucho más importante, no tienen los superhéroes siempre delgada ropa ajustada a la piel y la milagrosa habilidad de mantenerse completamente impecables, incluso en el medio de la batalla?

FORMED IN 1998, the LA based 30 Seconds to Mars was originally comprised of Shannon Leto on drums with younger brother Jared providing vocals. Although only the Leto brothers wrote 2002's '30 Seconds to Mars' in its entirety, as interest in the band began to ignite, the two were joined in by Matt Wachter on bass and keyboard before, following something like a speed dating cycle of guitarists, they finally found a soul mate in Tomo Milicevic, who remains in the band today. Wachter did not prove such a steady companion and, in March 2007, announced his departure from 30STM before, only a month later, shacking up with fellow alternative rockers Angels and Airwaves, Tom Delonge's similarly mystical and floaty troupe. In spite of standard speculations, Jared assured fans that the split was wholly amicable and should be seen less as a simply the end of one phase as the beginning of another, sound a little cliché? We'll leave that for you to decide...Prior to Wachter's exit 30 Seconds to Mars stumbled upon moderate success courtesy of their 2002 self-titled debut. The album, produced by Bob Ezrin and released through Virgin Records, is certainly far more conceptual than the band's latest work and abounds in thick labyrinths of samples and synchs. '30 Seconds to Mars' is often considered to be a lonely and interior exploration in comparison to 2005's 'A Beautiful Lie', which, although still personal, takes fire from various worldwide issues that continue to be an overwhelming source of inspiration, and apparent obsession, for the band today. Although 'A Beautiful Lie', produced by Josh Abraham, gained 30STM recognition through a more mainstream approach, pushing the band onto the main stage of last year's Download Festival, it was when the boys appeared on Radio One's Live Lounge in September 2007 to debut their shadowy trancelike interpretation of Kanye West's huge hit 'Stronger', that things began to take off on a whole new level. 30 Seconds to Mars' tour in February 2008 sold out remarkably quickly and, due to its overwhelming, somewhat unprecedented, success, even warranted the addition of extra dates; a rare feat for any band fronted by an actor turned musician, especially one still viewed with only amusement or disdain by a substantial section of the media. 30 Seconds to Mars obviously knew that, with the world finally watching and the odds stacked firmly against them, they needed to remain one hundred per cent faultless and equally fierce. Could they even aspire to erase the hefty scratch ingrained on the memory of the UK thanks to 'Hollyoaks' resident wannabe Steph Dean's supreme butchering of 'The Kill'? Honestly? Probably not.

Never ones to shy away from the limelight, or the threat of an astronomical budget, the boys decided to enlist not only a pair of dancers courtesy of the Royal Ballet, but additionally a gospel choir and a performance from STOMP in order to enhance their first night onstage at Hammesmith Apollo, yet this show betrays only a sliver of their excess. It is precisely 30 Seconds to Mars' supreme attention to detail coupled with the burning desire to conquer untested ground (quite literally in some cases) that led them to break records ad they became the first American band to film in both People's Republic of China and the first band in history to record two hundred miles north of the Arctic circle as they created the videos for 'From Yesterday' and 'A Beautiful Lie'.While all the above leaves the more traditionally inclined amongst you retching and wincing at the pure vulgarity of it all, take a second to consider the drive behind such seemingly ostentatious showmanship. While Jated leto obviously has a natural flair for the dramatic and cinematic - this is an actor associated with dark and disturbingly beautiful films that include 'Requiem for a Dream', 'American Psycho' and 'Fight Club' after all - the band simultaneously appear to possess a perception of the industry especially in its relation to society today, able to thrust their art into a new sphere; music, in theory, becomes the basis to rouse physical and political change.As well as the 30STM website, Army and Echelon, all of which contribute to the worldwide network of fan clubs and street teams designed to promote and sustain the lifetime of the band, 30STM have taken it upon themselves to create abeautifullie.org, a website intended to raise awareness of environmental issues and control our abuse of the planet. While Jared admits to being no expert on the environmental condition of the world, he also proposes that whatever a band can do to raise awareness is preferable to sitting around and doing nothing at all. The band not only encourage fans to show changes they are making through uploading '30 Seconds to Green' videos onto Buzznet.com, but also promote cute, yet nonetheless worthwhile tips one abeautifullie.org: 'If everyone tool thirty seconds to inflate their tires to the proper pressure we would save 2000,000 of oil a day.'

It seems to be then, that far away from the flashing lights of Hollywood, the celebrity girlfriends, the shiny pots of eyeliner and the excessive showmanship, the essence of 30 Seconds to Mars is their craving to go beyond the real of what's expected, to always push harder and do something more. The question is however, though music has long been a form of personal catharsis and cure, can this methodology really be applied to the earth? Inevitably only time will tell but, having proved they are a band more intent on saving the world than beautifying it, let us remember two things. Firstly, Jared Leto is fronting one of the first bands to successfully traverse the thorny void between movie theatre and microphone; secondly, and more importantly, don't superheroes always have skin-tight clothes and miraculous ability to maintain complete flawlessness, even in the midst of battle?
